A centre in Computer Gaming Technology is in the initial stages of development in Sault Ste. Marie. It is the intent that such a centre will eventually lead to cluster development by leveraging student and faculty involvement through the international Master of Science in Computer Gaming Technology degree being delivered by the University
Abertay Dundee, Scotland at Algoma University College in Sault Ste. Marie Canada.
Development of the centre has commenced with the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre’s (SSMIC) technology incubator and game development lab (ICIZ) on the campus of Algoma University College.

ICIZ is a game development lab open to anyone interested in developing / enhancing a commercial application using game development and animation software.

Master's of Science in Computer Games Technology at Algoma University College

It was the first.

It's still the best.

Now it's available in North America.

The three-semester, 12-month MSc in Computer Games Technology program fuses many aspects of the game development process - programming, design and business - into one professional degree. Students will study Game Design and Development, Programming for the Xbox and PC, Console Games Programming, The Games Marketplace, and Artificial Intelligence for Games, among other courses. At each step along the way, students will produce practical work pieces to show future employers.

The program emphasizes team production of a working game prototype - giving Abertay Dundee grads the advantage of a practical work portfolio as they embark upon their game development careers. Want evaluation of your game prototype? You will receive that and professional exposure through Algoma U's "Futureplay" academic games conference and games competition, now entering its fifth year. There's also the opportunity to enter the world-renowned "Dare To Be Digital" game design competition, held every summer in Dundee, Scotland, and in which students from Algoma U are guaranteed a slot.

Upon completion of this program, graduates will be ready for a career in game development, armed with an industry-backed Master's degree recognized worldwide for its excellence. The video games marketplace continues to grow, as it becomes the core of electronic entertainment in the home. The demand for talented game developers and programmers will only increase, creating an ever-expanding range of career opportunities around the world. Recent graduates of the Abertay Dundee program are currently employed by SEGA Racing Studio, Rockstar, Electronic Arts, Blitz, Realtime Worlds, Codemasters, and countless "indie" game developers.

Teaching is centered around lectures, followed by sessions in a dedicated computer lab. Students should plan on spending 12 hours per week attending classes, supported by approximately 30 hours per week of individual study or computer lab time. Assessment throughout the program is 100%-based on coursework, including practical work, reports, essays, and presentations. Completion of the MSc CGT program requires two semesters of coursework, followed by a third semester during which the student will complete a research-based dissertation in a computer games related area.

"The Master of Science in Computer Games Technology is a program of study that covers the full spectrum of Game Development; I would highly recommend this program for anyone looking for a sure fire path into the industry! It is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun." - Richard Jaquich, MSc CGT Student
