About

The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre is committed to fostering growth, ingenuity and innovation among the youth of the Algoma Region.

NextGenSSM
SSMIC is leading a Youth Partnerships project, funded by the Ministry of Small Business andConsumer Services. The Innovation Centre has developed compelling, dynamic activities and materials that target youth in grades 8 - 10. These materials will showcase entrepreneurial opportunities and success stories in the region’s S&T sectors. Part of this funding includes outreach to schools.

Phase one of the program has consisted of the production of an interactive DVD in conjunction with a group of committed private sector and non-profit organizations. This DVD features interviews with local science and technology entrepreneurs and an overview of the support organizations, programs and opportunities available to youth. This DVD will also be available to the schools for viewing throughout the year.

Phase two of the program, which is currently in the works will see the hosting of an interactive website where youth can be directly involved in pod-cast interviews with members of the S&T community, showcasing their work in S&T and discovering local opportunities.

Youth Entrepreneurship Program
In 2006, SSMIC launched an exciting Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) to pay and provide guidance to 15 local youth for 10 months, while they plan, develop and open a business.  Participants are paid for 35 hours per week to focus their business idea and receive additional training and support to develop their entrepreneurial skills.

Junior Achievement - JA Titan Program
In 2007, the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, in partnership with BDO Dunwoody LLP and Enterprise Centre Sault Ste. Marie will be delivering the Junior Achievement (JA) program to students in the Algoma Region.  This unique programs gives students high-level leadership experience without the high-stakes risks.

JA Titan is an interactive web-based business simulation where high school students compete as companies in a fictitious market.  Students make executive decisions to discover the many triumphs and challenges faced by senior management.

As a realistic online simulation, JA Titan challenges students to navigate the dynamic changes of our technology-driven global marketplace.  Students plan and execute each aspect of a virtual company's strategy - price, production, marketing, capital investment, and research and development.

JA Titan is curriculum-linked, student-centered and skills focused.
