Shared Service GIS Solution for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray)

Shared Service GIS Solution for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray)

2012

Client: Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB), which includes the city of Fort McMurray, is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada. The municipal boundary encompasses the Athabasca Oil Sands. RMWB has initiated a 22 billion dollar downtown redevelopment project that will create a state of the art intelligent community. A component of this development will involve the creation of a shared service IT solution which will include a shared service GIS component.

The SSMIC GIS team was contracted to undertake a project to analyse the current situation of GIS in the municipality and the requirements, constraints and steps to implement a world class GIS solution that will meet the needs of the municipality and other future partners in a shared service GIS solution.

Stantive Technologies Group, a consultant engaged by RMWB to assist with the implementation of the shared service IT solution, determined that the SSMIC GIS solution in Sault Ste. Marie is the only example in Canada of a highly successful large multi enterprise shared service GIS solution.
