The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) offers GIS consulting services based on the impressive expertise of its GIS team. In 2000, the SSMIC formed the Community Geomatics Centre (CGC) to assist the City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) in the efficient retrieval, reproduction and analysis of spatially related municipal and utilities infrastructure. The CGC developed an award-winning Integrated Geomatics Model, touted the most comprehensive in Canada, to support multiple applications.

Since its inception, the CGC has built on its expertise and expanded to provide services to health and human service providers and a number of other organizations interested in the potential of GIS. The CGC municipal/utility model has been implemented by other municipalities and can be used by virtually any municipality and public utility application and applied to their needs. The CGC has partnered with health and social agencies to improve the health of the communities by adding health and social data to the community's municipal GIS dataset. Early results indicate improvements in public safety, reductions in municipal liabilities and more effective use of budgetary resources.
