Sault Youth Soccer Client Mapping (2014)

Client: Sault Youth Soccer Club and League

Youth soccer tends to be one of the most affordable and popular organized youth sports programs in Ontario.   Mapping youth soccer rosters can help determine where physical activity gaps may exist within a municipality, and where an increased effort in getting children to participate in physical activity programs may have the most benefit.   The CGC mapped the Sault Youth Soccer League’s roster of players ages 4 to 8 who were registered in between the years 2008 and 2013.  Players were mapped by their postal code of residence and results were presented as a spatial density.  A density map allows for a quick view of both high concentrations of soccer players as well as gaps within the urban area of the city.  The CGC also compared 2011 registration numbers to the census data available for that year (it is the latest census data available).  This is done at the Census Dissemination Area geographic level, which are essentially small neighbourhoods delineated by Statistics Canada.  This allows us to show the population of youth soccer players aged 4 to 8 as a percentage of the total youth aged 4 to 8 in each DA (neighbourhood) in the city.
